JUVEDERM, RESTYLANE, VOLUMA, PERLANE

There are several types of dermal fillers available. The most popular dermal fillers are temporary, and comprised of hyaluronic acid – a naturally occurring sugar found in the body. When injected, these fillers combine with water in the skin to instantly restore lost volume, and reduce lines and wrinkles. Most hyaluronic fillers contain lidocaine, a local anaesthetic, which minimizes any discomfort during the treatment. These fillers can also be dissolved quickly with a natural enzyme, in the event a patient is dissatisfied with their treatment. Results last approximately 6 to 12 months, during which time the body breaks down the filler naturally.

RADIESSE

Radiesse is a longer-lasting dermal filler that is comprised of calcium-based microspheres suspended in a natural gel. In addition to restoring significant volume, Radiesse stimulates collagen growth, thus rebuilding the skin’s foundation. It is particularly useful for augmenting the cheeks and jawline, as well as filling in naso-labial folds. Results may last longer than a year, after which Radiesse is gradually broken down and naturally absorbed by the body.

THE PROCEDURE

Once the appropriate dermal filler has been selected for your desired result, it is injected under the skin using a fine needle. Most fillers contain lidocaine, a local anaesthetic, which greatly minimizes discomfort during treatment. Topical anaesthesia may also be used, particularly in more sensitive areas such as the lips. The injection process takes 15 to 30 minutes depending on the area(s) treated, and the results are instant with most patients returning to their normal activities immediately after.

Dermal filler treatments are generally well tolerated. Possible side effects include temporary skin reactions such as redness, tenderness, and bruising, and are usually resolved within a week or less. It is highly recommended that filler treatments be scheduled well in advance of important social events.
